I’ve been asked to be a part of a really cool tribute album to celebrate The Postal Service and the 10th anniversary of their album “Give Up”. I contributed with my take on Sleeping in, check it out below!

Sleeping In by Andrea Caccese (of I Used to Be a Sparrow and Songs for the Sleepwalkers)

I like TPS, but to be completely honest, I’ve only heard a few of their songs, and Sleeping in was not one of those. When I usually record a cover version it all happens really spontaneously. I often get fixated on a song I like and I want to explore it to the point that I want to make it mine, not only as a listener, but as a performer, offering my own interpretation of it.

With Sleeping in, I had the exact same mindset, but the difference was that the song unfolded before my eyes the moment I finally sat down and tried to find my own way into it.

USES:

50Hz

1. Increase to add more fullness to lowest frequency instruments like foot, floor tom, and the bass. 2. Reduce to decrease the “boom” of the bass and will increase overtones and the recognition of bass line in the mix. This is most often used on loud bass lines like rock.

100Hz

1. Increase to add a harder bass sound to lowest frequency instruments. 2. Increase to add fullness to guitars, snare. 3. Increase to add warmth to piano and horns. 4. Reduce to remove boom on guitars & increase clarity.

200Hz

1. Increase to add fullness to vocals. 2. Increase to add fullness to snare and guitar ( harder sound ). 3. Reduce to decrease muddiness of vocals or mid-range instruments. 4. Reduce to decrease gong sound of cymbals.

400Hz

1. Increase to add clarity to bass lines especially when speakers are at low volume. 2. Reduce to decrease “cardboard” sound of lower drums (foot and toms). 3. Reduce to decrease ambiance on cymbals.

800Hz

1. Increase for clarity and “punch” of bass. 2. Reduce to remove “cheap” sound of guitars.

1.5KHz

1. Increase for “clarity” and “pluck” of bass. 2. Reduce to remove dullness of guitars.

3KHz

1. Increase for more “pluck” of bass. 2. Increase for more attack of electric / acoustic guitar. 3. Increase for more attack on low piano parts. 4. Increase for more clarity / hardness on voice. 5. Reduce to increase breathy, soft sound on background vocals. 6. Reduce to disguise out-of-tune vocals / guitars.

5KHz

1. Increase for vocal presence. 2. Increase low frequency drum attack ( foot / toms). 3. Increase for more “finger sound” on bass. 4. Increase attack of piano, acoustic guitar and brightness on guitars (especially rock guitars). 5. Reduce to make background parts more distant. 6. Reduce to soften “thin” guitar.

7KHz

1. Increase to add attack on low frequency drums ( more metallic sound ). 2. Increase to add attack to percussion instruments. 3. Increase on dull singer. 4. Increase for more “finger sound” on acoustic bass. 5. Reduce to decrease “s” sound on singers. 6. Increase to add sharpness to synthesizers, rock guitars, acoustic guitar and piano.

10KHz

1. Increase to brighten vocals. 2. Increase for “light brightness” in acoustic guitar and piano. 3. Increase for hardness on cymbals. 4. Reduce to decrease “s” sound on singers.

15KHz

1. Increase to brighten vocals (breath sound). 2. Increase to brighten cymbals, string instruments and flutes. 3. Increase to make sampled synthesizer sound more real.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Brombones is an alternative rock band with a really unique twist, delivering music with a feel that is somewhere in between the most eclectic Beatles (think White Album era) and the grit and dark psychedelic approach of contemporary bands such as Queens Of The Stone Age and The Flaming Lips.
The Californian four-piece set out to produce and release a cover version of “The Sun Never Shines On The Poor” a tune that was originally written by British folk rockers Richard and Linda Thompson, released in 1975 on their album “Hokey Pokey”. The original song has got a folk-rock vibe to it, with a very interesting darkness, created by the lyrical content as well as by the melodic patterns. The song’s peculiar feel and eclectic nature make it a perfect ground for experimentation for a band with open views like Brombones, who set out to leave their own mark on the song.
Guitars blinking an eye to garage-rock (single coil grit, dark, cavernous reverb tones) add a rough edge to the song, that does a great job driving the whole thing along with a vocal with an almost gypsy-like feel (Think Gogol Bordello) that really fit with the “circus folk” atmosphere Brombones create with this cover.
It’s quite pointless to compare this version to the original: Both version have got something unique to offer - and in my opinion this is the point of cover songs: It’s damn interesting when an artist can take a song and re-interpret it, re-arrange it to their own taste, sensibility and even update it to the times. This doesn’t only showcase the creative potential of an artist, but also the lasting power of a well written song, still inspiring new generations of musicians after decades from its original release.
